Hannes Junestav is a versatile jazz musician, frequently performing within many different styles and genres, ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, to hard bop, free jazz, as well as pop, funk and soul. He is an experienced player in both small ensembles and orchestral settings such as big band, and of course a soloist!
Hannes grew up mostly in Uppsala and was fortunate to be part of sort of a generation of driven music students interested in jazz, several of whom he still plays with, for example the majority of band members in Mainland Jazz Collective! After completing secondary education in Uppsala, Hannes studied one year at the renowned pre-college jazz program at Skurups folkhögskola in southern Sweden. He then moved on to study the jazz program at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and graduated 2019 (bachelor) and 2022 (master). With quite a few years living in Stockholm, Hannes has established himself as one of the professional freelance musicians based in the city. He is active with own projects and as a hired musicians locally, nationally, and internationally.
Hannes Junestav has received some awards from different musical institutions and organizations. Here are some of them:
Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien (national scholarship) - 2022
Uppsala Musikverkstad (Jazzaspen) - 2022
Musikens Hus Vänner Uppsala - 2021
Föreningen Klassisk Jazz (Louis Armstrong award) - 2020
Kungl. Musikhögskolan - 2020
Faschings Vänner's Award - 2019
The first contact that Hannes had with jazz music was at a young age through family and relatives, where a particular interest in traditional jazz is highly present. That meant a quick and carefree way into the practice of improvisation, something that Hannes values greatly. Since then Hannes has pursued many different musical tasks and initiatives that he has encountered through curious exploration and musical meetings. However when taking up something new, he never tires of what was before, making him the multifaceted musician that he is.
