Biography

Hannes Junestav is a trombonist, composer, and arranger based in Stockholm, Sweden. He works as a freelance musician — frequently leading and co-leading his own bands and projects, while also performing as a band member and soloist with a wide variety of other groups. Since 2023, he has been the head trombone teacher at the Institute of Jazz at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he also previously studied.

In 2022, Hannes released his debut album Reassembled, featuring the eminent saxophonist Håkan Broström as guest artist. In early 2026, he is set to release his second album, Vinter, featuring an exciting line-up of guests: Dina Grundberg (vocals), Tobias Wiklund (cornet), Sebastian Mattebo (alto saxophone), and Sandra Arvman (violin). These projects serve as the main platform for Hannes’ own compositions. He also writes and arranges music for other bands and occasions — not least for Mainland Jazz Collective, the Hard Bop-oriented sextet that has released four albums and celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2025.

Growing up, Hannes was introduced to jazz music at an early age, mainly through traditional New Orleans jazz — a style several musicians in his family specialize in. During his youth and later through his studies, he explored many other styles and subgenres of jazz and related music. Today, he is a versatile jazz trombonist, heard in settings ranging from New Orleans jazz and Hard Bop to modern jazz and music influenced by pop, soul, and funk — performing with small groups as well as big bands and larger ensembles.
